Electrochemical etching

Electrochemical etching is a process that permanently marks conductive materials. It was originally developed for the aerospace industry to mark metal parts with precision and consistency. 

Electrochemical etching involves: 
  • Pressing an electrolyte-soaked electrode onto a stencil placed over a metal part
  • Applying a fixed potential bias for a certain duration
  • Selectively removing a specific phase in the metal while leaving other phases intact
  • Regulated corrosion using an electrode and an electrolyte solution
Electrochemical etching is also known as: Electro etching, Chemical etching, Electro marking, Electrolytic etching. 
Electrochemical etching benefit: 
  • Fast, reliable, and low-cost
  • Produces a high contrast, permanent mark
  • Can be used on any material that conducts electricity
  • Can produce other, more complex electrochemical effects at the anode and the cathode
